Novonaya is a city in western Lupinissia, a province of Kelssek. It is the second-largest city and metropolitan area in the province. The city is located on a grassland and experiences a semi-arid continental climate, with dry cold winters and temperate summers. The Bilant river passes through the city, with the ancient core and historical zones located on the river's western banks. Novonaya's main industries are natural resources (principally uranium and potash), agriculture (most importantly wheat and cattle), higher education, and chemical processing. Together with Provinsk, Vekaiyu, Novonaya was a host city of the 12th Summer Olympics.

The city was the ancient political centre of the Vanardians, a largely nomadic horse-riding people who ranged throughout the Yasterian grasslands. Located on major land trading routes, it grew as a trading centre frequented by nomadic pastoralists and was the residence and fortress of the Vanardian warlords and elder councils who had authority over disputes and the organization of raids on sedentary farmers and towns of the grasslands.

Education and culture[edit]

Novonaya's tourism sector capitalizes on the city's frontier image, history, and Vanardian culture, with the Prairielands Park a popular attraction for its portrayals of Vanardian horse-raider mythologies and the annual Lupinissia Fair. The University of Novonaya, a research university with over 30,000 students, is based in the city. The Moeston Museum of Paleontology displays lots of dinosaurs and is also a research centre given the large number of fossil finds in the region. The hipsters hang out in Dogeport, located on the formerly industrial riverside where warehouses and wharves are now converted into lofts and microbreweries.

Transportation[edit]

The city's mass transit system consists of a network of street trams and grade-separated light rail, which are collectively known as the Novonaya Electric Trams (NET). Almost no one refers to by its full name. Originally a single privately-owned tram line, the NET was nationalized in 1948 and is now an agency of the city government through which track-based extensions were built.

Novonaya-Stalbund is the city's main passenger railway station, and is served by Rail Lupinissia intercity services and the Velocit high-speed rail system's Yasteria Line, which connects Novonaya to Kelssek's east coast as well as across the western border to Provinsk in Vekaiyu. The city's main airport is Novonaya International, located in the suburb of Catfield Creek. Three Kelssek Forces Air Command squadrons also utilize the airfield; the military facilities are referred to as KFB Catfield.

Sports[edit]

The city's main professional sports teams are the Rotor Novonaya club, which has teams in the Rugby Superleague and Water Polo Premier League, the highest national competitions in those sports, and the Auroras Hockey club which plays in the second division of the Kelssek Hockey League. Novonaya was one of the two host cities of the 12th Summer Olympics. In football, FC Novonaya won promotion to the KFL Championship in the years after the Olympics helped by renewed popularity in the sport and the renovation of the Griffin Park stadium for the Olympics.
